The News & Observer's News in Education program reaches thousands of students across North Carolina every year. We owe a great deal of gratitude to all of our sponsors for making it possible for students to have access to our newspaper, educational resources, and more.

By providing newspapers to students you are:
  • Supporting the effort to promote lifelong learning and literacy.
  • Enhancing the quality of civic responsibility in schools through better informed educators, students, parents and community members.
  • Transforming students into interested, active citizens.

Donations and sponsorships from subscribers, local businesses and corporate sponsors enable The News & Observer to offer digital subscriptions of our newspaper to educators, free of charge. Donations support the creation and distribution of resource materials, lesson plans, and parent-child activities for public and private schools grades K-12 in our home-delivery area.

How Do I Become a Sponsor?

By sponsoring one of our many educational programs or newspaper features, you will assist educators in your town and across the state. Below are several ways to help support your community and education in schools by becoming an NIE sponsor. Contact NIE Manager, Elisha Manassa, by email at nie@newsobserver.com to pledge your sponsorship today.

Publication Sponsorship
Local and national businesses can promote their organization by sponsoring an educational supplement for use in the classroom or at home.

NIE offers a wide variety of publication sponsorship opportunities including serial stories, customized in-paper features and teacher guides that are distributed inside the newspaper. Each publication can be tailored to a sponsor's goals and objectives.

Publication sponsors receive the following benefits:

  • Company logo on the publication.
  • Company logo and link to sponsor website on nie.newsobserver.com.
  • Inclusion in a thank-you ads run in the News & Observer (for one year).
  • Distribution of sponsored publication to home delivery customers (total circulation of 103,000).
  • All supplements are made available online as a high-resolution PDF file and are promoted by NIE on the website, through eNewsletters and social media channels including Facebook and Twitter.
  • An option for overrun of the publication for the sponsor's use.

Classroom Sponsorship
Give the lifetime gift of learning by putting newspapers into the hands of students. Sponsor a subscription of newspapers for a classroom or a school. More than 400 schools in the area participate in The News & Observer'sNIE program to receive access to the newspaper along with lesson plans and other educational resources, all at no charge to them.

Your sponsorship will support the NIE program for one full school year at one of the following levels:

Platinum $2500: Provide access to daily M-F newspapers for 10 classrooms.
Gold $1000: Provides access to daily M-F newspapers for 5 classrooms.
Silver $500: Provide access to daily M-F newspapers for 2 classrooms.
Bronze $250: Provides access to daily newspapers for 1 classroom.

Vacation Donations
Our regular newspaper subscribers can help schools by making a vacation donation and donating the value of their newspaper to NIE. When you are going on vacation, call N&O Customer Service (1-800-522-4205) to stop your newspapers for the duration of your vacation and select the option to donate the funds for the value of the papers to NIE. If you put your paper on hold online, just select the NIE donation option from the drop down menu.

Bill Donations
Even if you can't pledge a full Classroom Sponsorship, just remember that every penny donated to the NIE program helps. Subscribers may check a box provided on their bills to donate any amount to NIE.

To all of the subscribers and businesses that have made donations and sponsored supplements - thank you! The teachers and students truly appreciate your contributions!
